Long haul for Spotlight - and it could lead to Anaconda
FOLLOWING news retail giant Spotlight will open in Hervey Bay on November 10, the company's executive chairman has told the Chronicle the move was more than a decade in the making.
And it may be the just the beginning, with sister company adventure superstore Anaconda a possibility for Hervey Bay in the future.
Zac Fried, whose parents founded Spotlight, said the company had considered several different sites in 10 to 12 years in an effort to open a Hervey Bay store.
"It's probably one of the most frequent locations I've done in the group to look for a site," he said.
Mr Fried said the retail space, recently vacated by Sam's Warehouse at Stockland shopping centre, would be more than 2000sq m.
"It's going to be one of our biggest stores for Queensland," he said.
Mr Fried, who joined the family business 20 years ago, said the Pialba location was chosen for its accessibility and plentiful car parking.
He said Hervey Bay's Airport expansion had given a huge boost to the region and the new Spotlight shop was a great sign of growth.
"It's a great holiday destination, I've been many times," he said.
Mr Fried said he was thankful to Stockland Hervey Bay centre management for their part in making the opening possible.
"I've got to thank Paul the centre manager," he said.
"I turned up on his doorstep and he said he knew there was going to be an opportunity."
Mr Fried said he was looking forward to visiting Hervey Bay to train new staff in the lead-up to the opening.
