Lucifers Lounge in Mackay promises ‘hell of a night’
FROM paratrooper to pub general manager, Matt Dennis has certainly experienced a diverse working life.
Mr Dennis' new venture, Lucifers Lounge And Sports Bar, will open in June at the corner of Victoria and Wood Streets in Mackay's central business district.
The venue will be primarily aimed at attracting "classy", mature clientele and will likely employ about 12 staff members.
"I'm looking forward to it. I've been working for other people for 25 years, apart from my time in the army, so I'm really getting excited," Mr Dennis said.
"The plan's to market to the middle-aged onwards market, instead of the younger market, to give those people another option, somewhere to go.
"I'm bringing a bit of everything. I've travelled overseas, seen a lot of clubs and pubs and I'm bringing together a lot of cultures in the hospitality industry into one bar.
"I would say being a new place will bring people through the door, initially. It'll be all about class and top quality service.
"I've been in this game for 25 years and it's all about covering the basics, then worrying about the other things."
Mr Dennis said future patrons can expect to chill out to relaxed house music, as opposed to "pumping techno".
"We'll also have a strong focus on sports, obviously," he said.
"There's still heaps of renovations to do and I don't want to give away too much.
"It'll be a house music scene. You'll actually be able to talk to each other, as opposed to yelling over the music."
Mr Dennis believed a new venue in Mackay would be an exciting proposition for residents.
"Everything is on track now for the opening," he said.
"Renovations are coming along well. It hasn't been difficult, but there's been a lot of repairs.
"For example, there was 42 power points in the ceiling near the bar - not anymore.
"We've spent a lot of time cleaning up and improving the premises. They're quite old."
Mr Dennis was confident the new venue will succeed and he had a few choice words for potential patrons.
"Basically, you're going to have a hell of a night and it'll be the hottest venue in town," he said.
Lucifers Lounge is located on the second floor of the historic Australian Hotel building.
