HIS mates had spent three hours fishing of the Urangan Pier, but "lucky fisherman" Nick Finnis only needed 10 minutes to reel in this beauty.

On a clear Thursday morning on an incoming tide, Mr Finnis cast using an 80 pound line baited with herring and only 10 minutes later he dragged the spanish mackerel up.

It was Mr Finnis's first spanish mackerel of the season.

Prominent Fraser Coast fisherman and Chronicle columnist Andrew Chorley said the conditions had been almost perfect on the water.

"The past few days have looked good," he said.

"But the weekend's looking a bit breezy."

Mr Chorley said hooking a spanish mackerel was a regular occurrence.

"In July-August they're pretty common off the pier," he said.

Mr Chorley operates Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing Charters.
