Maryborough gliding enthusiasts head to Gympie open day

THE desire by local gliding enthusiasts to establish a club at the Maryborough Airport could be given a boost by open days for gliders at the Gympie Aero Club on August 6 and 7.

"We are working with a local group wanting to start up a gliding club at the Maryborough Airport,” Fraser Coast Mayor Chris Loft said.

"While it is early days in the establishment of the club, the Gympie open day will be a rallying point for Fraser Coast residents interested in becoming members of a local club.

"Every extra club that is established on the Fraser Coast acts as an attraction that can lure new residents and visitors, or give visitors another reason to stay longer.

"A mark of a vibrant community is the variety of groups and clubs that operate.”

The open day will showcase the many facets of aviation taking place at the Gympie aerodrome.

On show will be gliders, powered hang-gliders, parachuting, gyrocopters, vintage cars and motorcycles. Entry is a gold coin. The Gympie Gliding Club is located at Lobwein Rd, off the Bruce Hwy at Kybong (located 10km south of Gympie).
