Maryborough's masters to represent Queensland
HOCKEY: Maryborough will be well represented at the Australian Masters Women's Championships in Bunbury, Western Australia, this week.
Five players, Diane Fraser, Jenny Houlcroft, Myra Reilly, Kathy Rogers and Jenny Trotman, have earned selection for Queensland.
They fly out today and will train for two days, with the tournament to be played from September 27 to October 6.
All five players were selected at this year's Queensland Masters State Championships in Townsville over the June long weekend and have been training hard getting ready to give their best in their individual age groups.
It's the first Queensland Master's State selection for keen Tinana player, Jenny Houlcroft, who was called in only a week ago and is thrilled to have this opportunity to compete at this level and wear the "mighty maroon” colours.
It's also the first selection in 13 years for fellow Tinana stalwart Kathy Rogers, who has previously represented in the 35, 40 and 45+ divisions.
Both Jenny and Kathy will play in the 55s age group.
Myra Reilly, a member of the bronze medal-winning Australian Masters Women over 60s team, has recently returned from the Masters World Cup in Teressa, Spain.
"The playing conditions in Spain were extreme, having to play in temperatures between 40 and 49 degrees,” she said.
"At times the heat was so oppressive that it almost felt like the ball was melting.
"The conditions we are expecting in Bunbury are at the other end of the spectrum with maximums predicted to reach only 19-20 degrees - much more pleasant for playing hockey.”
Diane Fraser, was selected as a member of the Australian O60s team, but was forced to withdraw through injury.
Fraser has worked hard throughout the season to regain her strength and fitness and will compete in the O60s team with Reilly.
Jenny Trotman, who made her Queensland debut last year, has been selected in the 45+ team. Trotman has had a busy year, playing in all three of the local women's division each week throughout the season.
She was a member of the Brothers Division 3 premiership winning team.
