Minister gives $12 million for 'dangerous' intersection fix

THE notoriously dangerous intersection of Urraween Rd and Maryborough Hervey Bay Rd will receive a $12.5 million upgrade.

A spokesman for state Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey confirmed he would visit the site with Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders on Friday afternoon to make the announcement.

The upgrade will include a new signalised intersection, as well as wider approaches and dedicated turning lanes.

Mr Saunders said despite the intersection being outside his electorate, many constituents travelled through it regularly.

"It's in the Bay electorate but Mark Bailey listened, he came and he delivered," Mr Saunders said.

"It is for the whole of the Fraser Coast

"My wife and friends; everyone uses that intersection a couple of times a week."

The announcement marks months of campaigning to make the intersection safer.

Last year Geoff Redpath began a petition to upgrade the site.

He was ecstatic when told about the announcement.

"That's fantastic news," he said.

"It's the most dangerous intersection in Hervey Bay.

"5000 people voiced their opinion in the petition and many more gave me support - we've finally seen the light at the end of the very long tunnel."
