New light for Cenotaph

MARYBOROUGH'S Cenotaph will be seen in a new light come October, with the council planning to install new lights to illuminate the Queens Park site.

Work has already begun at the Heritage City site to remove the pre-existing box light and replace it with three new in-ground uplights.

The new upgrades will also see a footpath constructed in front of the cenotaph, as well as a path at the back of nearby gardens.

New turf and an irrigation system will also be added to the memorial area according to the council, as well as a new concrete pad under the pre-existing gates.

Funding for the upgrade was part of a joint initiative from the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the State Government's Community Memorial Restoration Program.

FCRC Mayor Gerard O'Connell said the council had received funding for the project earlier this year, but was waiting until August to work on the area in order to fit around RSL services.

"We hope that the project will be complete within the next three weeks," Cr O'Connell said.
