New name could make a difference
EDITORIAL: Why not? It could just work.
Changing the name of Hervey Bay to Newport Bay, or something else attractive, could actually make a difference.
But who here is willing to enter such a debate seriously?
Not many, I would imagine.
Mr Couper's proposal could be described as slightly wide of left field but that by no means makes it unworthy of discussion.
You see, it's the big thinkers that make a difference.
At the moment, Hervey Bay has an image problem. It's seen as boring and the domain of the retired and the unemployed.
Now you and I know there's so much more to it than that, but there is a frequently used saying these days that perception is reality.
And so it is in many cases.
The problems here are being addressed by random, timid tickling of what has always been done.
Mind you, as soon as the tickling causes a chuckle, the feather of progress is quickly withdrawn lest it upsets someone who's lived here since 1788 and sees no need for change.
Changing the name of Hervey Bay just could give us a fresh start, particularly in tourism.
So let's talk about the benefits and lack thereof in the suggestion.
The fact that's it's always been this way should not enter the discussion.
