UPDATE: $200 million PresCare hub set to create 450 jobs
UPDATE 12.35PM: THE approved PresCare health hub is expected to create about 450 jobs for Maryborough and the surrounding region.
At Wednesday's ordinary meeting, Fraser Coast councillors unanimously voted in favour of PresCare's development permit.
Innovation and aviation portfolio councillor Paul Truscott said the new project would be worth between $150 and $200 million.
"This is a massive and important development proposal for Maryborough as it will establish a medical precinct in conjunction with existing health facilities, enhancing and supporting these facilities," Cr Truscott said.
"This is a multi-million dollar investment (Prescare advised in Council public participation that they estimate between $150 - $200 million) in the region and will develop substantial employment options for construction; over 300 jobs, and also post construction; over 150 jobs across a diverse range of services, medical, retail, food, cleaning, administrative and community based roles."
Cr Truscott said the health and aged care services hub would be built on the land across from the Maryborough Hospital in Yaralla St.
"It facilities the development of health and aged care services as a hub in Maryborough, which is a growing industry in our region," he said.
"Some services anticipated for the site include health care services, child care services, food and drink outlet, office, retirement facility, shops and short term accommodation."
He said the project was expected to begin late 2017.
"We should acknowledge that this all won't happen overnight, Prescare advised they are anticipating to begin later next year, so this will be providing a longer term benefit to the community," he said.
"And it's in division 3, the best division I say!
"And I'm trying to find if it is a record, but I'd imagine this could be the single biggest investment in Maryborough, perhaps forever."
EARLIER: COMMUNITY support organisation Prescare has been given approval to develop plans to create a health hub in Maryborough.
In the Fraser Coast Regional Council's ordinary meeting on Wednesday, it was announced that the go-ahead had been given for PresCare to build a hub on a vacant site along Neptune St in Maryborough.
The conceptual master plan includes a residential aged care facility, a mixed use complex, a childcare centre, independent living units, gardens and a potential community hub.
The approval gives Prescare certainty about the future use of the site and will allow the company to start working on detailed development plans to present to the council.
