Posting food photos on social media could be bad influence

THE consumption of unhealthy foods could be influenced by the rise of social network users sharing posts and photos of their meals online.

A report funded by fast food retailer SumoSalad claimed the increase of users promoting their foods on platforms like Instagram could be influencing behaviour offline.

It found that of more than 130 million photos tagged #food on the platform, only four of the top 20 foods promoted were considered "healthy".

Sydney University of Technology researcher Dr Eugene Chan said the validation of uploading such photos online could result in increased consumption of such foods.

However, the research did not assess the impacts of promoting healthier food choices on such social media platforms.
