Power kicks eight points clear atop the table

AUSSIE RULES: A white-hot start put Bay Power on track for its ninth win of the season.

The Power took on Gympie Cats in a top-of-the-table clash at Urangan's Keith Dunne Oval, a game which could have tightened the race for the AFL Wide Bay minor premiership.

But a five-goal opening term and strong defensive effort handed the Power a healthy lead, one they expanded in the second quarter and never looked like losing.

"It was a tough, hard game," Gay said. "In terms of stuff to work on, just a little bit of discipline, but on the whole it was a good effort. We basically stuck to our game plan, the score wasn't too bad."

Glenn Bailey kicked six goals while captain Josh Wheeler slotted three as the Power won 15.10-100 - 9.14-68.

It extended the Power's lead atop the table to eight points, ahead of the now-level Gympie and Hervey Bay Bombers.

"We expected they'd be hard like that, and we knew it would be a four-quarter effort," Wheeler said. "We knew they'd come out hard. We sustained it early on and gave ourselves enough of a lead.

"They gave us a bit of a scare but I reckon we'll tighten it up and we should be fine.

"It was a really pleasing start to the game. We'll work on those last quarters, the last five or 10 minutes of the game and we'll come back well."

Gay said the final quarter fades were due to attitude rather than fitness or form.

"I think it's more an attitude thing. We spoke to the guys just then, that's something we can fix straight away," he said.
