'Maddening': RACQ slams servos as Coast pays most for fuel

THE RACQ has slammed petrol companies for unreasonable margins as Sunshine Coast motorists pay more to fill the tank than anywhere else in the south east.

The club's Monthly Fuel Price Report found the average price for regular unleaded petrol (ULP) on the Sunshine Coast during May was 153.6 cents per litre (cpl), compared to 146.2cpl on the Gold Coast, 147.6cpl at Ipswich and 149.8cpl in Brisbane.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said there was no good reason for prices to be so much higher than other parts of the south east.

"Sunshine Coast drivers have every right to be frustrated, they're being charged more for petrol than drivers living just an hour down the road in Brisbane," Ms Ross said.

"Service stations on the Sunny Coast recorded the highest retail margin of any area across the south east, at 15.3cpl, which is completely unreasonable.

"It's frustrating for drivers that some fuel companies on the Sunshine Coast have been so greedy.

"High prices on the Sunshine Coast are also due to a lack of competition amongst servos," she said.

"It's maddening for motorists as prices aren't dropping as low as they should."

During May, Brisbane was ranked as the second cheapest of the major capital cities in Australia, a change on April when it was one of the most expensive.

As the south east market reached the bottom of the price cycle, Ms Ross reminded drivers across the region of the savings they could make if they shopped around for the best deals.

"Our message to drivers is simple - only fill up at the servo selling for the lowest price and aim to pay no more than 135cpl while they're cheap. by using apps and websites like RACQ's Fair Fuel Finder you'll find out where the cheapest deals are in your area."
