Sexy billboards given green light ... for now

A QUEENSLAND parliamentary committee has given the green light for advertisers to continue to display sexually explicit outdoor advertising at thousands of locations across the state.

The Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee, chaired by the Member for Ipswich Ian Berry, was asked to determine whether outdoor advertising should have a similar classification standards framework in place as required by other forms of media.

The committee was asked to look at whether the sexualisation of children through sexually explicit outdoor advertising was acceptable as well as the range of outdoor advertising including roadside billboards, shopfront windows, on public shelters and public transport, and the existing regulation of those advertising spaces.

The issue came to the fore in Ipswich three years ago when complaints were made about a billboard beside Brisbane Rd at Dinmore which advertised Brisbane's annual Sexpo exhibition.

The advertisement was taken down after Mayor Paul Pisasale contacted the sign's owner.

However, the committee recommended the Classification of Publications (Billboard Advertising) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill not be passed.

In determining its conclusion, the committee accepted there might be some merit in the policy objectives being pursued, but identified significant issues with the bill that could not be rectified simply.

It determined given the Health Community Services Committee was conducting a more detailed inquiry on sexually explicit outdoor advertising, it would be prudent to wait for the outcome of that inquiry before making recommendations on other ways to achieve the policy objectives of the bill.

The Health Community Services Committee has until January 31 to report its findings and recommendations to State Parliament.

The advertising industry across Australia (including billboard, transport and poster advertising) is currently self-regulated.

The system is funded by a levy paid by the advertising industry.
