Shops selling hot cross buns early
THE Fraser Coast has barely put away the Christmas tree and tinsel and already major shopping centres around the region are stocking hot cross buns for Easter.
Coles and Woolworths supermarkets have already stocked the shelves with the Easter buns, with other supermarkets set to follow in coming weeks.
Brett Leishman, owner of Pialba Supa IGA, said while his store sold spicy fruit buns throughout the year, the official hot cross buns would not go on sale at his store until the first week of February.
He said there was demand for the buns all year round.
Easter eggs would not be in his store until the second week of February, he said.
While the eggs would be on sale from that time, he said there wasn't a particularly high demand for them before Easter.
"We sell 80% of our eggs just before Easter," he said.
Father Joseph-Hien Van Vo from St Joseph's Catholic Parish in Hervey Bay said people had to make their own choices when it came to when to buy hot cross buns.
"We live in a democratic world, so much that we have no power to control commercial business," he said
"To keep your Christian tradition of eating hot cross buns on Good Friday, don't buy them before then.
"Good Friday is the day of fasting."
