Sky's the limit for some schoolgirls' formal dresses

MOST Fraser Coast students will only wear their formal dresses and suits for a few hours to celebrate the end of their schooling - so how much is too much when it comes to splurging on formal wear?

Spending upwards of $600 is now the norm for most young women attending formals in the Fraser Coast, with elaborate dresses and designer shoes growing in popularity.

It's not strange to hear of a young girl spending more than a $1000 on her formal attire according to Wedding Daze store owner Mark Pledger, who said a lot of local girls were now shopping in metropolitan areas and spending up big on formal dresses.

"You get two different budgets when it comes to formal dresses," he said.

"Some girls are willing to travel out of town and pay lots of money for the big puffy princess dresses.

"While others shop locally and pick up simple sophisticated dresses for half the price."

Mensland store owner Neville O'Sullivan said young men certainly had it easier when it came to formal season.

"A lot of young men just hire their suits for end-of-year formals," he said.

"They can get their entire ensemble for a few hundred dollars and they don't have to worry about growing out of it.

"Then they can add their accessories like suspenders, bowties, belts and cufflinks."

Mr O'Sullivan said a wide range of suits had been hired and bought in the lead up to end-of-year formals.

"The type of suit really depends on the kid," he said.

"But slim-fit suits in black and grey have been really popular this year too."
