Sometimes ‘service’ is a loose term
EDITORIAL: I'm curious to know how others have experienced the customer service, or should I say lack of customer service, at some businesses around the Fraser Coast and surrounding areas.
You would think in times of supposed economic difficulty, businesses and employees would be willing to treat their customers with some respect.
It seems this is not the case and I'm wondering if others can relate.
A few days ago I was in a restaurant near a hotel in the region.
I bought a soft drink from the restaurant and, after having a meal, I took the can with me to finish in the car. My brother, my fiancé and their friend were at the hotel and I was going to give them a lift home after finishing my meal.
I walked into the hotel to tell them I was ready to leave and without preamble, the bar attendant looked at me and snapped "just so you know, you can't drink that in here".
It was the can of creaming soda that I had left on a table as I told the boys I was ready to go.
Never mind the fact that offering to be the sober driver had ensured her place of employment had business.
Even if you believe a customer to be in the wrong, is there any need to speak to them rudely?
From employees unable to muster a smile when I buy lunch from a local cafe to supermarket employees quickly closing their aisle when they see me approaching with just a few items, forcing me to get into a longer line behind people with full trolleys, it simply makes me cranky.
I hate the idea of self-service machines replacing people's jobs, but on the other hand a machine can't be rude to you and make you wish you'd never spent your money there.
Of course I should mention that many venues are fantastic and make me want to return as often as possible just to enjoy the service - and you can give them the praise they deserve by visiting our Facebook page and giving that business the thumbs up.
But it's always the worst experiences that leave a lasting impression, isn't it?
