The original Mary Poppins gives her blessing

THE original Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews, says it is time for the magical nanny to be brought into the 21st century with a remake of the classic film.

The 80-year-old actress earned the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as the titular nanny who uses magic and an umbrella to fly in the beloved 1964 Disney film.

Julie has given her blessing to the film studio to re-imagine the tale so a new generation of kids can enjoy Mary's adventures with the Tomlinson kids - based on the book series by PL Travers - over 50 years on.

When news first broke of a Mary Poppins remake, Maryborough's Proud Marys association president Barb Turner said she hoped Maryborough would get a mention or at least a nod in the film.
