Thief jailed for stealing $12k of phones from Optus store
A THIEF who broke into an Optus Store on the Sunshine Coast and fled with more than $12,000 worth of electronic items has been jailed.
Clinton Thomas Bush pleaded guilty by videolink in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court today to multiple charges including stealing and enter premises and commit indictable offence.
Police prosecutor Amanda Brewer told the court on April 16, Bush broke into the Yes Optus store in Maroochydore and stole multiple phones and tablets, to the value of more than $12,000, as well as causing $7000 damage to the store.
"The offending in relation to the break-in at the Optus shop certainly wasn't opportunistic. There was some degree of planning, including the tools required to remove the items," she said.
The court heard Bush had cut the security bracketing of several iPhones, iPads and smart watches and caused damage to the window when breaking in.
All the items, besides an iPhone 11 Pro, had since been recovered by police.
"The most aggravating feature is the defendant's criminal history. It's 16 pages dating back to 1998, and littered with property offences and offences of dishonesty," Senior Constable Brewer said.
Sen-Const Brewer submitted with the persistent nature of Bush's offending, a jail sentence of two and a half years would be appropriate.
Bush's lawyer, Matt Cooper, told the court Bush fell into drug use when he was younger, which led to him committing crimes.
"Just prior to the enter premises offence, he instructs me that he relapsed and was suffering from injuries he suffered from a car crash some years ago and choose to self medicate," he said.
"He now knows this was not the right way to do it."
Magistrate Chris Callaghan said he needed to take Bush's lengthy criminal history into account and because Bush was in his forties, youth was not on his side.
He sentenced Bush to two and a half years' jail, with a parole release date of February 16, 2021.
This took into the account the 70 days Bush had already spent in custody.
