Toowoomba grocer opens new store in revamped shopping centre
Green grocer Rob Smith lost a lot of sleep in order to get his second Toowoomba store up and running, and the result speaks for itself.
Hundreds of customers have flooded into the new Toowoomba Fresh grocery store at the Wilsonton Shopping Centre since it opened on Friday.
Having spent several months planning the new location, Mr Smith said the reactions from shoppers made the ordeal worthwhile.
“It’s been fantastic, the customers have really embraced it — we had our official opening on Friday, and it’s been constant since we opened,” he said.
“We were working on one or two hours of sleep a night to get this done.
“We couldn’t bring the fruit in a week beforehand, it had to all come in one night, which was like fitting a bowling ball into a funnel.
“The biggest thing I’ve heard from customers is how good it is to see Wilsonton Shopping Centre growing again.”
Mr Smith, who now employs about 40 people at both Wilsonton and Grand Central Shopping Centres, said he wanted to contribute to the city’s amazing fresh food offerings.
“Toowoomba is just fantastic for fresh food, we’ve got amazing fruiterers, butchers and bakers,” he said.
“We try and look for where the holes are in the supermarket, particularly with a lot of local suppliers, like local honey, yoghurts, and Crows Nest soft drinks.
“We buy Australia-wide – we’re down in Rocklea markets every day and depending on the time of the year, we buy a lot of the local produce from local growers, like herbs and shallots.”
