Vandals rip sword off light horse statue ahead of Anzac Day

IDIOTS have broken off the sword of the recently installed light horse statue at Hervey Bay's Freedom Park memorial.

RSL sub-branch president John Kelsey was devastated on Monday as he inspected the desecrated statue just four weeks before the Anzac Day centenary celebration.

Police are investigating and will review CCTV footage taken in the park.

Mr Kelsey believes vandals entered Freedom Park on Friday night and snapped the sword.

"This is total vandalism and it's also a commonwealth offence to desecrate a national memorial," he said.

"It's totally disgraceful."

The light forse statue was installed in October after fundraising from the Hervey Bay RSL sub-branch and the community.

Vandals attempted to pull the sword off the statue only weeks after it was installed, cracking it but not removing it.
