VIDEO: Zika alarm for pregnant woman next door to The Globe
IN just 10 days time, heavily pregnant Depot Hill resident Jess Edwards is expecting a baby girl.
Yesterday all that Jess and her partner Russell Burton had to worry about was choosing the name of their second child, but that was before they learned that the Zika virus had arrived in Rockhampton.
Jess and Russell, and their four-year-old daughter Keira, live right next door to The Globe Hotel, where a Rockhampton man, who contracted the virus, stayed for a few days before he was diagnosed.
Jess' old boss was the man in question, who picked up the virus during one of his frequent trips to South America.
About an hour ago Queensland Health and Rockhampton Regional Council employees turned up on Russell's street to spray homes and businesses in attempts to contain any mosquitoes in the area.
"It's a bit of a worry," Russell admitted.
"It can be pretty dangerous for an unborn child.
"I don't think there's actually a cure, or a vaccine.
"We're just waiting for a call from a Queensland Government nurse, hopefully they'll be able to fill us in."
The couple have a doctor's appointment this afternoon to get themselves checked.
