VMR throws doors open to attract members

VOLUNTEER Marine Rescue will throw open their doors on Sunday for their annual open day.

The open day is a chance for people to learn what VMR actually does, and allows them to join the volunteer organisation.

Events co-ordinator Maryanne Hudson only joined VMR in May, but said she had benefitted from the highly esteemed training program.

"I started off in admin but I made sure I mentioned I liked to organise and run events, and I've ended up doing a lot for this weekend," she said.

"This is an opportunity for the public to see what we do, but it is also one of our major recruitment drives."

All volunteers are trained to the highest standard, and Mrs Hudson said several government departments had enlisted VMR to run training courses.

"It does depend on what you're doing but we usually ask volunteers to give at least four hours per week," she said.

The open day will run from 10am until 2pm.
