Plastic wrap peeled away from First World War certificates

HELD for more than 20 years in the Maryborough library, the plastic wrapping has been peeled away from two original First World War certificates for the QANZAC 100 workshops.

Lieutenant Colonel Harry William Lee was headmaster at St Helen's State School and original Commanding Officer of the 9th Battalion at Maryborough.

He was also part of the initial Gallipoli landing.

Harry returned home to Australia in 1916 and was awarded a trio of medals.

It was for these acts of service that Harry was presented with a certificate of appreciation in 1919.

The Lee family was also presented with a certificate following the death of their son (also Harry) who contributed to the war effort.
