Wide Bay to fight Tassie in battle of Tobruk
A BATTLE has begun between the Wide Bay region and Tasmania to secure the decommissioned Navy heavy-lift HMAS Tobruk as a dive wreck.
A location has been identified in water 30m deep halfway between Bundaberg and Hervey Bay to scuttle Tobruk as part of a new tourism venture set to inject millions into the region for years to come.
Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt has been working with local experts to make a submission to the Federal Government in an attempt to secure the ship for our area.
The fight between the Wide Bay region and Tasmania's Binnalong Bay is brewing, with the Apple Isle attempting to scuttle the ship in their chilly waters for a dive wreck.
But Mr Pitt said the best chance of bringing the decommissioned warship to our waters was if the whole community got behind the plan to produce "our best business case".
"We need to demonstrate to the government and Defence that it's something the local region desperately wants and needs," he said.
Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell called on the community to back the idea to boost the economy.
"I can't believe the mainland is in competition with Tasmania," he said.
Would you like to see the HMAS Tobruk secured in our area as a dive wreck to boost tourism?
