Disney sequel to Mary Poppins on the cards
SPECULATION about a Mary Poppins sequel has approval from both Maryborough business and community groups.
Entertainment Weekly reports a Disney sequel to the beloved original is on the cards, and Mayor Gerard O'Connell will do "whatever it takes" to bring the filming to Maryborough.
Cr O'Connell said he would make a call to Disney to promote Maryborough as the perfect place to shoot the sequel.
"There are short term gains from a film crew being based here including equipment and venue hire," he said.
"Plus merchandise sales at the screening would be good. But it's the profiling of Maryborough in the movie which would bring in the most amount of profit."
The Proud Marys Association president Barb Turner, who helped publicise Maryborough as Mary Poppins author PL Travers' birthplace, has also welcomed the news.
"There's no one who hasn't heard of Mary Poppins and in the last movie (Saving Mr Banks) Maryborough got three mentions," she said.
"These included the children's father working in a bank, the park nearby and the firing of the time cannon. Maybe in the sequel there could be even more mentions."
The original movie was released in 1965
Maryborough is the birth place of P L Travers
The original movie was based on Travers' first Mary Poppins book
