Woman run over by moving truck on Mackay road

A WOMAN who jumped from a moving truck to go to the toilet on the side of the road and was run over may have been drinking at the time, police suspect.

The woman was a passenger in the semi-trailer which was pulling over on Sams Rd about 9pm Friday, October 2.

Mackay Forensic Crash Unit Sergeant Michael Hollett said the truck driver had been pulling over to the side of the road when the woman left from the cab while it was still moving.

Initial inquiries with the woman had suggested the truck was pulling over so she could go to the toilet on the side of the road.

Sgt Hollett said the rear two tyres of the trailer, loaded with steel mesh, ran over the woman’s legs and she was taken to Mackay Base Hospital with injuries.

The truck driver had travelled up from Gin Gin earlier that day with police suspecting alcohol was being consumed in the cab.

The male truck driver was breath tested and a blood specimen was taken, with investigators awaiting results.

Sgt Hollett said charges were pending the outcome of the blood analysis.

It is the latest incident of concern for police who have warned motorists patrols will be out in force cracking down on bad driver behaviour.

“People just need to be mindful of their drinking, especially since the warmer months are approaching,” Sgt Hollett said.

“From our point of view, it’s not so much what happens to them, it’s what effect they can have on someone else.”
